More pizza delivery drivers end up in accidents on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year, says a U.S. insurer. They also delivery a lot more pizza.
According to a Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. study, as reported in InsuranceQuotes.com, the past five years have seen a 9% increase in auto insurance claims arising from pizza delivery accidents on Super Bowl Sunday. Severity was reportedly also higher.
According to reports, Fireman's Fund Insurance underwrites as much as 20% of U.S. pizza delivery policies. However, considering the number of pizzas that gets sold for the big game, the per deliver accident rate might actually be better than average.
Super Bowl Sunday is far and away the biggest day for pizza sales and has been for years, according to a variety of sources. Domino's Pizza expects to sell 9 million slices on game night, 44% more than a typical Sunday, And Pizza Hut, the largest U.S. pizza chain, expects a 50% sales increase.
The Papa Johns chain expects to sell nearly 1 million pizzas on Sunday, says The Insurance Journal. That same report quotes Pizza Today magazine saying that the typical pizza operation will see a 35% increase in business on the day.
"With the volume of business up, there are going to be more accidents," Fireman's Fund spokesperson Suzanne Meraz told InsuranceQuotes.com.
